Each year my wife and I join her mom’s family in Maryland for Thanksgiving. It’s a big family (there were 25 at the Thanksgiving table) and I am fortunate to be a part of it. You’ll have to listen to hear why this year was so amazing, but here are some important lessons we can all take from a strong family:
- Importance of example: we’ve discussed before how children see and follow the example of parents and grandparents, and how leaders have the same effect. Everyone in my wife’s family, from the adults to the children, sees the example set by the grandparents and knows it’s good. The way in which leaders speak to and treat their teams directly affects how they will treat customers. Our passion (or apathy) is contagious.
- Importance of expressing care/love: my wife and her family have grown up seeing what love looks like and hearing what it sounds like. They have experienced what love means. It’s important for leaders to show a similar display of “love” (appreciation, care, support, etc.) through action, not just words.
- Importance of group sharing and celebration: every time my wife’s family gathers for the holidays they share updates about their lives, read old love letters and look at old photographs, and celebrate the how much it means to be a part of the family. Doing these things are fun, but they are also great learning opportunities for the younger generations. Organizations can do the same thing to strengthen team relationships and give people a better understanding of how their contribution fits. It’s even more powerful when these celebrations can tie into the organization’s vision and values.
It’s ok if you doubt me on any of this because Sir Richard Branson agrees.

My First Few Weeks of Work
I rejoined Western Reserve Partners three weeks ago and was a bit overwhelmed at first, but things have settled down. I’m excited about my role and the opportunity to help companies who want to make acquisitions, refine their strategy, find and contact prospects, and negotiate the transactions.
