Think what you want of him, but his message is amazing. If you haven’t seen it, it’s worth the five minutes.
An important message for young people to hear, yes, but it really applies to all of us. I acknowledge he’s an actor and could be ‘acting’ the whole thing, but I think he is sincere.
His three points:
1. Opportunity Looks A Lot Like Hard Work
In other words, don’t dismiss something that seems like hard work, because that probably means it’s a great opportunity. He tells a few stories of jobs he held as a young man and emphasizes that he was never too good for any job he held. He was thankful to have one. He viewed each job as a stepping stone for the next – each was an opportunity to learn.
2. Being Sexy Is About Being Smart, Thoughtful And Generous
You may think this ironic coming from a movie star, but he is right. He is right with respect to our personal lives and in business (just replace ‘sexy’ with a word like appealing, successful or marketable). Business is won when people win the favor and trust of other people. Being smart, thoughtful and generous is a good way to do it.
3. Build Your Life
I think this is my favorite point because we are, in fact, living in a time when you can build your own life. We have more opportunity than at any other time in history. We are more mobile and more connected. We can build the life we want if we are willing to embrace these words from Steve Jobs (paraphrased by Ashton in the video above):
Everything around you that you call life was made up by people that were no smarter than you. And you can change it. You can influence it. You can build your own things that other people can use. Once you learn that, you’ll never be the same again.
I learned this recently, and I am not the same. It is true, unsettling and exciting all at the same time. I’m just trying to figure out what to do with it. Here is the original Jobs footage, I hope it blows your mind too:
