[This is an excerpt from an e-book I wrote more than a year ago. I never published it, but I think I will now. Stay tuned]
We live in one of the most interesting times in history. Competition is truly global, in almost any niche. Customers can easily find options halfway around the globe with the click of a mouse. Even easier, they can do it from their phones.
Companies have been dealing with this for years now. Businesses are learning and finding ways to compete globally. Old news, right?
You don’t need me to tell you that people are your biggest asset. People handle your daily operations. Your people hold the deep relationships with your customers and keep them happy every day. Your people come up with big ideas so your company can stay competitive in this global market.
But just like your customers, your employees (now, more than ever) have access to this global economy.
A New Chapter
Talented people have more options today than at any other point in history. Despite tough times in any one country, people can work from home for any company in the world. The best people will be found.
So if you rely on people to keep your business running, what are you going to do about this? What are you going to do to make sure your best people don’t leave for a better option?
You should hope your people are so good that they’re always being recruited. But it’s your job to create such a compelling opportunity that they’d never think of leaving.
In addition, any person with something to say can start a business with $100 and a laptop. Talented individuals who want to be a part of something significant, who no longer believe they can find it working for someone else, will figure out a way to build it on their own. Indispensable people will forever generate the best ideas and results. They just may be competing with you rather than working for you.
So how do you create a culture where the best people in your industry line up at your door to work for you?
Your job as a remarkable leader is to embrace each person for who they are so these brilliant ideas come out. Spend the time to help a person grow into who they’re meant to be. When your most talented people thrive, so does your business. You’ll become a magnet for talent in your industry. Your customers and shareholders will be happy.
